Welcome to Derby Civic Society
Welcome to the website of Derby Civic Society - We are passionate about our city and its heritage. We want to see it thrive, but at the same time retain its unique character. Derby Civic Society is dedicated to making Derby a better place in which to live, work, relax an visit.
We aim to preserve and enhance the character of the city by advising and campaigning on:
- The historic areas, buildings and public spaces
- Good design in new developments and regeneration areas
- Sustainability and quality of life in the city
Our activities include:
- The Derby ABCD Awards - also known as the "A Brighter City of Derby" Awards to recognise and celebrate outstanding contributions to the built environment in Derby. These awards highlight new buildings, conservation efforts, and improvements to the public spaces, parks and streets of Derby.
- The Derby Blue Plaque scheme - a joint initiative with Derby City Council, commemorating individuals of local, national or international renown who have lived in or had strong links with the city.
- The David Ling Award - an award for schools where pupils can be recognised for a project which is aimed at bettering or improving their school's setting or environment or at making a contribution in any way to a charitable cause within the local area.
Derby Civic Society produces a quarterly newsletter and has a monthly lecture programme with visits to places of local and national interest. Please see our membership page for further details, or click on the button below to join us.
